Nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to U.S. Supreme Court
Americans United Opposes the Supreme Court Nomination Of Amy Coney Barrett, A Foe Of Church-State Separation
Barrett’s record demonstrates a hostility toward church-state separation:
Barrett has shown support for depriving employees of their contraceptive coverage under the Affordable Care Act because of their bosses’ religious objections.
Barrett joined a 7th U.S. Circuit Court decision allowing Illinois to exempt religious services from its emergency health order meant to protect the public from the spread of COVID-19.
Barrett has affiliated with Alliance Defending Freedom and the Becket Fund – legal-advocacy groups leading efforts to misuse religious freedom to harm women, LGBTQ people, religious minorities, the nonreligious and others.
Barrett has shown she believes religious freedom can be used as a sword to harm others, rather than as the protective shield the Constitution intended it to be.
The Senate should not confirm a justice who will dishonor Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy and who won’t protect the principle of church-state separation. We oppose Barrett’s nomination, and we are ready to fight. Our team is committed to doing everything in our power to prevent her from undermining religious freedom.
