The Hobby Lobby decision, Its about more than Birth Control

They’ve done it again.

The US Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision, has once again struck a powerful blow against the wall of separation between church and state.

Thanks to the decision in yesterday’s Hobby Lobby case, the owners of for-profit companies will be allowed to use their religion as a trump card to override the interests of hundreds of thousands of female employees in receiving insurance coverage for contraceptives, and in turn, participating equally in society.

And as insulting and devastating as this decision is for women’s rights and access to contraception, it does not stop there.  It opens an extremely dangerous door for company owners to limit insurance coverage for any form of healthcare they find religiously objectionable andto use their “religious freedom rights” to trump laws prohibiting discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, sexual orientation or cohabitation outside marriage.  Quite simply, this decision could elevate employers’ religious views over employees’ civil rights in unprecedented ways.

The full extent of the fallout from the Hobby Lobby decision may not be known for some time, but I can tell you this: It will be a disaster.

Please make a generous donation to Americans United today, to help us stop the far-right fundamentalists who think the Supreme Court just flung the constitutional door wide open to accommodate the Religious Right’s discriminatory agenda.

The high court’s decision says that the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), a 1993 law that was intended to protect individual members of minority religions, allows for-profit corporations to use “religious freedom” claims to skirt all sorts of laws. This means that corporations could have court-sanctioned permission to discriminate against many groups, such as LGBT Americans, women and non-believers, as long as they do it in the name of “religious freedom.”
We won’t allow this to happen – and you can help us stop them.

Without your help, millions of workers may not be able to receive critical healthcare because their bosses have a religious objection to certain treatments or medicines.

Without your help, corporations will gain more and more “rights” as if they were people.

Without your help, the Religious Right will use phony claims of “religious freedom” as an excuse to discriminate against anyone who doesn’t fall in line with its radical agenda.

Please stand with AU to fight this misguided Supreme Court decision by making a generous donation today.
